Fillers

It’s no longer necessary to go under the knife to achieve the benefits of having a facelift. Kenya Williams, MD, and the Suburban Medical Aesthetics team in Evanston, Illinois, specialize in using dermal fillers to revitalize their patients’ skin and give them the effect of a facelift using noninvasive techniques. Current cosmetic procedures like injectable fillers plump up lines and wrinkles and reinstate a youthful appearance without requiring major surgery. What are fillers?

Age and sun damage reduce collagen and elastin production, causing skin to wrinkle and sag. Dermal fillers target the spaces in facial fibers, plumping them up and restoring the volume that decreases as people age.

They also boost collagen and elastin, proteins that contribute to your skin’s elasticity and strength. In addition, the acid in some fillers helps to retain water molecules at the injection sites, enhancing the effect.

What anti-aging uses do fillers have?

Fillers can be used effectively for many different procedures to address aging or change your appearance, including:

  • Reducing lines and wrinkles
  • Facial contouring
  • Enhancing cheekbones
  • Hand rejuvenation
  • Plumper lips
  • Liquid facelifts

Suburban Medical Aesthetics uses leading brands such as Juvéderm®, Restylane®, Radiesse®, and Sculptra®. These products contain active ingredients like calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA-SCA), and hyaluronic acid.

How do fillers work?

Juvéderm and Restylane fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is made naturally in your body and helps your skin look young and firm. There are specific compounds for different procedures, such as wrinkle reduction and lip plumping.

The CaHA in Radiesse and Sculptra’s PLLA-SCA creates a scaffold in your skin that stimulates new collagen and elastin production.

What happens when I have filler treatment?

The procedure for filler treatments with any product is broadly the same. Your provider tests your skin four weeks before your planned procedure to check that you don’t have any allergic reaction or sensitivity to the product. It’s unlikely there’ll be a problem, but the Suburban Medical Aesthetics team takes every precaution to ensure your treatment is safe and effective.

During the procedure, your provider marks the areas for treatment and then carefully injects the filler into your skin. After each injection, they gently massage the area to ensure the filler spreads evenly. It’s a relatively painless procedure, but you can apply anesthetic gel or cooling packs to the injection site.

How long do the effects of fillers last?

Juvéderm and Restylane treatments typically last between one and two years, depending on the product used and where you have the injections. Radiesse can last a year or more, and Sculptra is up to two years.

Considering how quick and easy the procedure is compared to a surgical facelift, having another treatment every year or two causes far less disruption and discomfort for patients.
