What is an eyelift?

An eyelift (blepharoplasty) surgery removes excess skin, fat, or both from around your eyes to refresh and rejuvenate your appearance. Eyelifts can reduce the heaviness and puffiness of your upper eyelids and remove under-eye bags from your lower eyelids — problems that often contribute to facial aging.

As your skin ages, it becomes less elastic, and gravity pulls it downward. Excess lower eyelid skin causes bulges and wrinkles, while upper eyelids typically develop an extra skin fold that hangs over the eyelashes. Without treatment, it could eventually interfere with your vision.

The Suburban Medical Aesthetics team performs blepharoplasty surgery as an outpatient procedure, so you should be able to go home the same day. The surgery requires light anesthesia consisting of local anesthetic injected into the surgical site and intravenous (IV) sedation.

What does eyelift surgery involve?

There are two types of eyelift surgery:

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty surgery takes around half an hour on average. It involves removing a small flap of skin and some of the underlying tissue along the upper eyelid crease. Your surgeon hides the incision in this natural crease, so there’s no obvious postoperative scarring.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty takes a little longer — 45 minutes on average. Your surgeon makes an incision on the back of your eyelid to extract the bag, which achieves a scar-free result. They might also need to remove some skin to correct issues like excess lower-lid skin and wrinkles.

Your provider plans the skin removal meticulously to achieve the desired degree of rejuvenation and ensure your eyelids close and function properly after your eyelift procedure.

What happens after eyelift surgery?

It’s normal to have some bruising and swelling after eyelift surgery that peaks in the first week. The Suburban Medical Aesthetics team advises you to stay home for about a week to recover fully. After this time, you should be able to return to work.

During the recovery period, you need to avoid wearing makeup or exerting yourself too heavily. Patients typically report that they remain true to their natural appearance but look less tired and feel refreshed after eyelift surgery.
